Glossary - Board Foot

A standard imperial unit of measurement that is commonly used in the lumber industry to describe the length of a piece of wood that is always 1 inch thick and 12 inches wide.

Because the width and thickness are constant in a board foot measurement, defining the size of a piece of wood in this manner becomes very easy because only the length varies.  For example, although a piece of wood that is measured at "42 board feet" is understood to be 42 feet long, it is still also 1 inch thick and 12 inches wide.
